What's new starting July 1, 2026
BrightBee is introducing dynamic pay— real-time factors like assignment urgency and school priority can now bump up what an assignment pays, on top of your role, hive, and seniority tier. This means more earning opportunities for every Bee, regardless of how long you've been with us. As part of this change, the milestone bonus cap is being standardized at 30% maximum bonus for our highest SuperBee Tier (400+ verified assignments completed).
When you see a new assignment in the app, the pay shown has always reflected a few things: the role type, your hive's market rate, and your milestone tier based on how many assignments you've completed. That formula has served us well — but it was static, treating a last-minute urgent fill the same as an assignment posted a week in advance.
Starting July 1, 2026, that changes. BrightBee is introducing a more dynamic pay model — one that reflects what's actually happening in real time. For the full walk-through, watch the June 2026 Town Hall recording.
What's changing: more factors, more opportunity
Pay will now be shaped by more factors. The new additions open up earning potential that wasn't possible before:
In practice, this means two assignments of the same role type could pay differently depending on when they're posted and how urgently the school needs coverage. The Bee who claims a high-priority, last-minute fill may earn more than they would have under the old fixed formula. Rest assured, your pay rate displayed at the time of claiming will be the rate you receive upon completing the full assignment.
What this means for you day-to-day
Keep an eye on the pay shown when you claim
The pay displayed on each assignment in the app already reflects all applicable factors at the time it's posted. What you see is what you'll earn — no surprises.
Urgency and priority create new earning moments
Under the old model, only your milestone tier could increase your rate beyond the base. Now, an assignment's context can work in your favor too — even if you're newer to BrightBee and haven't yet reached a high milestone tier.
Your milestone tier still matters
Your accumulated assignments still determine your seniority tier, and that tier still applies to every assignment you claim. Dynamic factors layer on top of — not instead of — your milestone bump.
About the 30% milestone cap
As part of moving to this more dynamic model, BrightBee is standardizing the milestone bump cap at 30% for all Bees. The vast majority of Bees are already at or below 30% and will see no change to their milestone rate.
A small number of long-tenured Bees — those who had reached the 35% or 40% tiers — will move to 30%. If you're in one of those tiers, you received a personal email from our team with specifics.
| Your current milestone tier | Change from July 1, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Below 30% | No change to your milestone rate |
| 35% or 40% | Moves to 30% for new assignments going forward |
We recognize that this adjustment is most felt by the Bees who've contributed the most over the years — and we don't take that lightly. Schools are working with tighter budgets, and BrightBee must stay within what partners can realistically afford in order to keep assignments available across all hives. Standardizing the cap is what allows us to reinvest in a dynamic pay system that creates new earning opportunities at the assignment level.
Why now?
BrightBee's assignment volume has more than doubled in the past year, and we now serve 60+ school systems and nonprofits across 7 states. As we've grown, so has our understanding of what schools need — and what they can afford. Many partners are operating with tighter budgets than ever, and keeping BrightBee accessible to them is what keeps assignments flowing to Bees.
A static, seniority-only pay formula wasn't built for this scale. A dynamic model is — and it's designed to reward Bees who show up when schools need it most.
